NopoGuard was developed by Dental Products Lab to address an unmet need in everyday dentistry. The CDC estimates that 600,000 to 800,000 needlestick injuries occur each year, with many more injuries unreported. Needlestick injuries expose workers to a number of bloodborne pathogens that can cause serious or fatal infections. Because occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens from accidental sharps injuries in dentistry continues to be a serious problem, OSHA requires employers to identify, evaluate and implement safer needle protection devices such as engineered sharps protections or needleless systems.
NopoGuard is the only reusable, on-syringe sharps safety device that works with existing syringes and needles. It is the perfect solution for recapping and disposal of your dental needles, keeping you, your team, and your patients safe from needlestick injuries.
That's right, NopoGuards are REUSABLE!
Watch this video to learn all the tips and tricks to master the use of NopoGuard in your clinical setting.

Transmission of bloodborne pathogens from needle stick injuries is a risk for dental health care personnel (DHCP) and patients alike. The CDC recommends technology-based engineering controls as the primary method to reduce exposure to bloodborne pathogens while using needles, during cleanup, and during disposal (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Guidelines for infection control in dental health-care settings – 2003. MMWR Recommendations and Reports 2003; Volume 52, No. RR-17, pgs 1-61).
NopoGuard is the first and only on-syringe sharps safety device that is compatible with your existing syringes and needles. There’s no need to adopt new tools or equipment and NopoGuard seamlessly integrates into your existing workflow. Because NopoGuard is at the point of care, it protects you, your team, and your patients from start to finish whenever needles are used. And, it’s reusable, saving you money and reducing waste.
Yes! NopoGuard is considered an engineering control to help prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens. As a "mechanical device," NopoGuard makes it simple to keep you, your team, and your patients safe from needlestick injuries from start to finish. NopoGuard provides safe, reliable protection without having to manage every needle safety precaution during assembly, use, and disposal with only one hand. Applicable excerpts from 29 CFR 1910.1030 are below.
OSHA's bloodborne pathogens standard prohibits the bending, recapping, or removal of a contaminated needle or other contaminated sharp [29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(2)(vii)(A)]. The standard provides an exception where an, "employer can demonstrate that no alternative is feasible or that such action is required by a specific medical or dental procedure." The standard goes on to provide: "such bending, recapping or needle removal must be accomplished through the use of a mechanical device or a one-handed technique" [29 CFR 1910.1030(d)(2)(vii)(B)].
We evaluated and confirmed the fit and performance of NopoGuard on syringes from almost 20 different manufacturers, including the top sellers from major distributors Henry Schein and Patterson Dental. And, we verified NopoGuard is compatible with standard anesthetic needles (up to 35mm in length) with pre-threaded hubs. We’re confident NopoGuard will fit with your syringes and needles. If it doesn’t, please reach out and we’ll make it right.
Each NopoGuard can be sterilized and reused a minimum of 250 times although many of our customers are reusing their devices hundreds more times before replacing them! As with other reusable equipment, NopoGuards may experience some cosmetic degradation or suboptimal performance over time that would necessitate replacement. The exact life expectancy of your NopoGuards depends on the use, care, and processing of the device. It is important to thoroughly inspect your NopoGuards and ensure they are functioning properly prior to each use (DPL assumes no liability in the case of disregard). There is a handy guide in the Resources section of our website that provides several examples of wear that you can expect to see after repeated sterilization cycles and prolonged use.
NopoGuard is compatible with most cleaning and sterilization processes common in today’s dental offices, clinics, and educational institutions. You can place NopoGuards in Tyvek pouches or cassettes depending on your current practice. Ultrasonic cleaners or automated instrument washers should be used to remove debris and clean NopoGuard. Use with mild detergents and warm water. Do not expose to chemicals. Thoroughly rinse and completely dry NopoGuard before sterilization. Steam sterilize for 3-5 minutes at 132ºC/270ºF or for 15-30 minutes at 121ºC/250ºF. We recommend drying for 15-30 minutes after sterilization cycle is complete.
You can only purchase NopoGuards directly from our website at this time.
For a dental practice that consumes about 1,250 needles per year on average, a single 5-pack of NopoGuards would last for an entire year before needing to be replaced (based on a minimum of 250 sterilization cycles). Typically, our customers order more than what matches 1:1 with their needle usage in order to streamline workflow and limit the need to clean and sterilize NopoGuards throughout the day. These customers order two or three (or more) NopoGuard 5-pks and typically reorder every other year.
Because NopoGuard can be repeatedly sterilized and reused, the per use cost varies based on the replacement interval. Replacing a NopoGuard after 250 sterilization cycles would result in a cost of about $0.15 per patient. That $0.15 per patient cost is based on $189 for a 5-pack of NopoGuards divided by 1,250 needles from the example above (we’ve found that a good proxy for the number of patients in this case is the number of needles you use). Some NopoGuard users replace their devices well beyond 250 sterilization cycles making their per use cost significantly lower (some as low as $0.05).
We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase of NopoGuard. We recommend purchasing a NopoGuard trial pack first to evaluate in your practice, clinic, or educational institution. If you don’t immediately see the value of NopoGuard, please return it for a full refund (less return shipping). Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns for 5-packs of NopoGuard unless you receive product that is defective or damaged.
Yes, NopoGuard is listed with FDA under the product code DZM. NopoGuard underwent extensive testing and simulated clinical use evaluations per ISO 23908 in order to satisfy FDA’s requirements for sharps injury protection.
The need for a better, more reliable, and reusable needle safety device extends beyond our borders. We are working through the regulatory process to make NopoGuard available around the globe. Please check back in for an updated list of countries where NopoGuard is approved for use.
The NopoGuard device, its packaging, and labeling were designed in the United States by Dental Products Lab. All of the packaging and labeling are manufactured in the United States. The raw materials for NopoGuard are purchased domestically and shipped overseas for molding using specialized equipment. The finished, molded components are then assembled and packaged in the United States.
